Stop playing it safe

Start seriously playing

Hi, I’m Josiah. I help actors deepen their craft, navigate their blocks, and remember why they fell in love with this work to begin with. My classes are grounded in rigorous technique and freewheeling fun.

I’m on faculty in the MFA Acting program at Brooklyn College, HB Studio, and the Yale Summer Session, and offer private classes and coaching. Students and clients have gone on to book roles in major feature films, Broadway, recurring roles on TV, and earn places in some of the world’s top conservatory programs.

What Folks Are Saying

“As a coach, Josiah always urges me towards truth and expansion. His guidance helps me to make bold choices rooted in truth and text, and he always challenges me to grow just a little past my comfort zone--and we all know, for an artist, that's where the good stuff is.”

Kate Abbruzzese — audition coaching client, recently booked a major feature film

“Before working with Josiah, I knew almost nothing about Shakespeare and classical texts. In a few short months, Josiah helped me move past my inhibitions with confidence, playfulness, and a strong foundation to help me grow. He inspires curiosity, and his passion for classical work rivals his dedication for teaching. If you’re serious about reaching your potential, working with Josiah is the right investment as an actor -- his mentorship will set you apart in the audition room!”

Chandler Sinks, MFA program coaching client, accepted into LAMDA

"I love studying with Josiah - he has a way of helping you focus on the energy you're bringing with you into the scene and how you're sending that to your partner. But mostly I love being around HIS energy and enthusiasm for the work, and I always leave every class inspired and having learned more about myself."

Katie May Porter, longtime student

  • “Josiah was a godsend!  He taught me how to find spontaneity in my work through playing specific actions.  I booked a leading role in a play after working with Josiah!”

    Jarod Brock

  • “Working with Josiah has been transformative. He has a very clear and direct approach to the work. Nothing feels muddled or over-complicated… I have found that my work has opened up in a remarkable way… and he has made me extremely excited about the possibility of where my work could go.”

    Ariana Papaleo

  • Josiah is an ass kicker of a teacher. Not only does he kick ass (as in he is a wonderful teacher), he knows the material backwards and forwards, challenging his students to do the same, and he brings an unrivaled amount of enthusiasm for the process that makes each rehearsal exciting and new. He is a constant reminder that all of you is a part of the work — your body, your heart, your eyes, your ears, your mind — all of you must be brought to the table to do your best. Josiah teaches that risking failure, braving through the scary things, and putting all of yourself out there is exactly what we need to do. Beyond the teaching though, Josiah is also a wonderful listener. He’s thoughtful, insightful, and takes care of his students. He’s a human and he understands that you are too.

Evan Moore-Coll, graduate of Brooklyn College’s MFA Acting program

  • “I’ve had the privilege to study with Josiah for quite some time, and I can easily say that he is one of the most wonderful teachers I’ve ever met. His classes are always filled with laughter, beautiful work and brilliant writing.”

    Kasia Kasevska

  • Josiah’s energy and excitement are infectious. He creates such a supportive environment where students can play, challenge themselves, and learn from others’ work—and have a lot of fun doing it. I can’t recommend him enough.

    Caroline Otto

  • I have felt seen in Josiah’s class in a way I have not in others. He can find you exactly where you are — meet you there — and joyfully widen the aperture of what you feel capable of as an artist.
